What is a Dental Implant?

Dental Implants | Mirage Dental | General and Family Dentist | SE Calgary

A dental implant is used to replace one or more missing teeth through the use of an artificial tooth root made from titanium metal or ceramic. Dental implants are surgically implanted into the jawbone, and after a short healing period, are fitted with a dental crown or bridge, thereby completing the restoration.

Dental implants are also used for patients who have dentures in order to improve the comfort and fit of a current denture when concerns such as inadequate bone level are causing an improper fit, pain and irritation on the gum tissues, and the need for the use of denture adhesives. Dental implants can be used individually or to support a number of dental prostheses, including implant-supported bridges and dentures.

The success of dental implants is very high. For those who do not have dental implants where needed, there is a greater risk of experiencing dental issues related to teeth supporting a fixed bridge, and there is a greater risk of accelerated bone loss in denture wearers, thereby causing dentures to fit poorly. This can result in patients not eating healthy, nutritious foods and suffering the long-term physical consequences of a poor diet as a result.

The greatest advantage of implants is that they are permanent. Unlike a denture or partial denture, it is not necessary to remove implants at night, and those with implants no longer have to worry about eating foods that will make their dentures slip. In addition, unlike a bridge, a dental implant can be brushed and flossed just like natural teeth.

Dental Implant Supported Dentures

Dental implant-supported dentures “clip” into the dental implants, providing a more secure fit. Some patients do not like traditional dentures because they move around or “float” above the lower gums when they become loose. An implant that anchors the denture to the gums can solve this issue and also resolve discomfort and chewing problems. Implant dentures can be either removable or fixed to fit a variety of needs.

If you are missing more than one tooth but not enough to require replacing the entire arch, implant-supported dental bridges can provide a very attractive and functional solution. An implant-supported bridge will not require support from your healthy surrounding teeth, so will therefore not compromise existing teeth. Implant-supported bridges preserve your chewing ability, help maintain the attractiveness of your smile, and help preserve the integrity of your jawbone at the location of the implants.

All-on-X Dental Implants

All-on-X Dental implants are a cost-efficient method to restore the function of your mouth and give you back the confidence and beautiful smile you desire!

Essentially, All-on-X dental implants are one full arch of teeth, attached with four or more dental implants.

All-on-X Dental implants work the same as individual dental implants, but for multiple teeth. Rather than putting titanium screws for each missing tooth, only X (number of missing teeth) are implanted. You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you might need is four or more precisely placed implants spread out within each arch of your mouth to restore your smile fully. Attached to these X-number of screws is a denture-like prosthesis, called a fixed provisional bridge. Since it is fixed to the screws, you cannot take it out and put it back in like with dentures; you can consider all-on-x dental implants as permanent dentures.

Benefits of All-on-X dental implants include:

  • A more affordable solution to traction dentures
  • They are fixed
  • Closely replicates natural teeth
  • Less deterioration or grinding of the jaw
  • Helps prevent further bone loss – the implants act as scaffold that supports the existing bone giving it something to hold on to
  • Virtually no loss of chewing function
  • Do not need to be removed after meals or at night
  • An effective long-term solution that can last for decades if cared for properly

Guided Implant Surgery

Mirage Dental uses what is called “Guided Implant Surgery.” This surgery, when it is indicated, is quick, precise and predictable. Using this method allows us to provide our patients with the best, most affordable implant procedures. By combining digital X-ray images and 3D printing, we will be able to print a surgical stent which will be used as a guide for precise insertion of Dental implant.
